This program promises to IGNITE the interest of 3rd-6th grade girls in the amazing game of volleyball. This will be accomplished through PLAY. On Monday evenings this fall, Byron Coach Owen Hoegh will be conducting this opportunity for 3rd through 6th grade girls! All of the game’s skills (Serving, Passing, Setting, Attacking, Blocking, and Digging) will be learned in the most effective and fun context possible – during gameplay. Games and instruction will utilize best practices in motor learning research, and we hope that this “ignition” will be an engaging opportunity that helps our young athletes “catch fire” for the sport.

Why Ignition?

This game is FUN to play! The typical indoor game of 6 on 6 can be somewhat difficult to learn for young athletes. In this program, athletes will get a lot more opportunities to touch the ball which is a key factor in developing the fundamentals, an understanding for how the game is played, and having cooperative and competitive fun with teammates. Smaller courts, less people, and lower nets make learning the game easier and a lot more fun!

The Net

All practices and competition will be on a 6'6" net, allowing the athletes to perform ALL the skills of the game on an appropriate height net for their age and size.

The Ball

We use a 12 & Under ball designed to be lighter and softer than the regulation volleyball. This allows the athletes to learn the skills appropriate for their size and strength.

The Court

Court size varies depending on the games we are playing. For 2v2 competition, court size is 12' x 18' (on each side) and for 4v4 competition, court size is 18' x 18'. We might change these dimensions and constraints to emphasize different parts of the game.

The Teams

There will be a maximum of FOUR athletes to a team, insuring that all athletes are PLAYING during competition.
